What Size Loom Should I Use for Knitting Hats?

After leaning the hard way...knitting a bunch of hats through trial and error (giving the unintended hats to charity), I learned what size loom was appropriate for what size hat. I have a set of Knifty Knitter Looms. I thought I would share with you what I learned. FYI - the picture above does not include the flower loom. I snagged this pic off Google so you could see what I'm talking about.

**Please note this sizing is based on using one normal yarn strand (size 4 bulk), and another fancier and bulkier yarn (5 or 6 - I really like to use 6). Because of the extra bulk of using two strands of yard the sizes become smaller than you would think.

12 Peg Loom (Flesh/Pink colored): Baby Booties, Baby Mittens

24 Peg Loom (Blue): Preemie Baby Hat

31 Peg Loom (Red): Newborn Baby Hat

36 Peg Loom (Green): Hat for Young Children (1 yr to maybe 8 yrs?)

41 Peg Loom (Yellow): Hat for Tweens and adults (this includes women adults especially... it looks WAY too big but believe me you need this size! I'm not sure about the age in between the 36 peg and 41 peg. I've used the 36 peg loom for my 1 year old and my 4 year old and it works great. We do have big heads in my family though :)

  3. my 41 peg is 34 inches in diameter, that seems way too big for a hat, am I wrong?

    1. circumference is 34", but when you measure across the middle of the loom it is 11". it makes a hat perfect for an adult or large headed person.

  4. The actual hat isn't as big as the loom itself Terri Lynn. :)

  6. I am making a hat for my seven year old nephew and I didn't know if I use the red or green loom

  7. Terri Lynn, Sarah Knorr is correct. Even when you are finished, the hat might look much bigger than you think it should be. It's the nature of this type of knitting. It's super chunky. It's not like a knit fabric or the kind of hats you get at a store.

Tammy, for a 7 year old - FOR sure use the green loom!!

The VERY best way to make sure a loom is going to fit the right size head is to measure it! If you get the loom, and it can fit over their head (not just resting on top) then you have the right size.

  8. How many rows do you do for a one year old hat?

    1. Hi Victoria, the number of rows is really dependent on the child and they type of hat you are knitting. If you have another hat nearby you can get an idea. The basic rule though is always go a little longer than shorter. You can always fold a hat over, or just have a little extra at the top. If it's too small then it looks really silly.

  9. Should one go by your chart and results using the 41 peg for all adults and 36 for young children if measuring the loom on their head is not possible?

  10. Hey Karen - now that I have a 9 year old son I can answer this more definitely. I would use the largest loom size (41 peg, yellow) for 8+ and older. My son wears the adults hats without issue. Honestly, my 3 and six year old also get away with it. We roll it up once, but they look super cute and are really warm.

So always go bigger! Small hats are uncomfortable and they look really weird stretched.

    Good luck!

  12. Gwen, thank you so much for this post! Through trial and error, I have found that I require the yellow Knifty Knitter to make a hat large enough to fit my head, and I'm glad it's not just me!

  18. @ Like_I'm_Sharing, I don't ever put an exact number for how many rows to knit. Every head is different. It will also depend on how you want the hat to look and if you have a brim on it or not.

If you have another hat that you know fits the child well, you can use that as a template, my favorite thing to do is to try it on the child before I finish (if you can do this).

    Good luck!

  19. Hello Ashley - I'm not good at knowing exact measurements. How old is the child? If you look at the ages up in the article above, it's a pretty good guess.

With loom knitting - if you have to guess, always guess the larger size! These hats look pretty weird if they get tight on someone's head, not to mention it won't feel very good!

    Thanks for visiting. Good luck!

  20. I am so glad you put both the color and the number of pegs for the loom size. I lost my Knifty Knitter blue, and I bought a replacement. The new one is pale green. So I have two greens. Different mfgr's use different colors.
